A PARTIAL LIST OF PERFORMANCE ENHANCING FACTORS:
Improving your biomechanical efficiency. Improve your riding position with the aid of someone experienced in fitting people WITH RIDING GOALS SIMILAR TO YOURS. Move up to a custom frame made by a Custom Builder experienced in fitting people WITH RIDING GOALS SIMILAR TO YOURS.
Determining your body fat percentage. For most Americans, the rampant hype in the selling-ads-on-television industry, fat-based food industries, plus all the other industries whose profits are enhanced by sedentary lifestyles (the medical industry, etc.), leads to excessive body fat. It is impossible to reduce your bicycle frame weight by 10 pounds. Most Americans can probably lose 5-10 pounds of fat, without endangering their health.
Riding or training more, but not to excess (overtraining)
Consulting a nutritionist
Following a proper pre-ride and post-ride stretching program
Riding with a faster crowd (velocity, not lifestyle)
Developing enjoyment of other types of exercise when you can't ride a bike
Hiring a coach
Developing a better awareness of what may be peripheral aspects of the bicycling experience for you (Some of these may be the main reasons you ride.):
Enjoying the scenery/environment
Exploring riding at different levels of intensity
Socializing with interesting riders
NOTE: Most of these do not require a custom bike. All of them do not require the most over-hyped, the latest, the lightest, the newest, or the most expensive bicycle technology.
