From the back cover of the Third Edition: About The AuthorTim Paterek has always been intensely interested in bicycles and bicycling. When 16 years old, he got his first job as a mechanic at a bicycle shop in Bloomington, Minnesota. As a high school student, he raced with the Amateur Bicycle League of America. In college, grandfathered in at Cat-2 level, he raced in the US Cycling Federation. In the fall of 1970, he opened a bicycle repair shop while attending the University of Wisconsin – River Falls, getting his Bachelor’s in Education in 1978. His hands-on experience expanded into building custom bicycle frames under the guidance of Terry Osell in Minneapolis. Over the next 12 years, in addition to building custom frames, Tim wrote the first edition of the Paterek Manual, and worked on another Bachelor’s degree in Technology Education at the University of Wisconsin – Stout. Over the years, Tim taught many students in his bicycle frame building courses. Since moving in 1992 to Vancouver, Washington where he teaches middle school Technology Education, Tim produced his videos on framebuilding and finished this Third Edition of the Paterek Manual. About the BookThe Paterek Manual for Bicycle Framebuilders flows from Tim Paterek’s history as a rider, racer, bike mechanic, custom framebuilder, and teacher. This Third Edition is completely rewritten to include feedback from Tim’s experiences teaching student builders. The book lets the reader see what custom frame design and building are all about. The reader can use this Manual to build his or her own bike, or begin a lifelong pursuit of custom bicycles and their riders. This book documents one builder’s lifelong approach to custom bicycle design and building, and reflects his devotion to teaching about framebuilding. The Paterek Manual will have a well earned place in the history of custom bicycle building in America. |
