At Zinn Cycles, we build custom road and mountain bikes out of steel or titanium, as well as custom aero bikes for time trials and triathlons.

Lennard Zinn founded the company in 1982 after a brief stint working in Tom Ritchey's shop. Lennard's background prior to framebuilding was in physics (1980 Colorado College graduate), jewelry-making, and as a member of the U.S. National Cycling Team (road). He is the author of Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance (now in its second edition), Mountain Bike Performance Handbook, and Mountain Bike Owner's Manual. He is also the owner of Lennard's Big and Tall Cyclewear and is a staff technical writer for VeloNews and Inside Triathlon magazines. In these various capacities, he has worked in wind tunnels and frame and component test labs.

Lennard's 6'6" height has led him to specialize in building bikes for big and tall riders. His years of racing on sponsor's bikes that were too small, too flexy, and/or that shimmied at high speeds led him to work on perfecting tall bikes that were stiff, stable, did not shimmy, and did not weigh a ton to do it.

Another Zinn specialization is small bikes, which developed while sponsoring Colorado's premier women's racing team for 11 years. In short, any rider on the size spectrum is welcome at Zinn Cycles. In addition to building fully-custom frames, Zinn makes stock Project BIG road and mountain frames for riders 6'4" and over. The Project BIG frames are custom-painted, however. Zinn also builds custom tandems and track bikes.

Zinn building methods in steel include TIG-welding (the only option used for titanium), fillet-brazing, and lugged construction. TIG-welded frames are completely argon purged, even steel ones.
