CHAPTERS:
1. TOOLS AND FIXTURES [Sample Page]
Tim starts the Third edition off with descriptions and photos of all the
equipment used by bicycle frame builders. Now you may learn the real name of
that "gizmo" in your toolbox. 71 Figures.
2. FRAME GEOMETRY AND THE WORKING DRAWING [Sample Page]
This Chapter covers 2 areas. First Tim goes into a lot of the history of
the major approaches to frame design, specifically, fitting the bike to
the rider. Tim has added a lot of information about custom bicycle frame
design in this edition.
The second part of this Chapter takes you step by step through the frame
drawing process. 42 Figures make the drawing process very clear.
3. VARIATIONS IN MATERIALS AND DESIGN [Sample Page]
The subtleties of frame geometry may not be visible to most people.
There are unlimited design variations and combinations that display the
framebuilder's approach to design.
Tim starts with the required and optional braze-ons like cable guides,
water bottle bosses, etc. and shows lots of variations. Then he moves on
to all the ways you can attach the seat stays to a frame.
There is a discussion of different lugs, BB shells, dropouts and
crowns.
Another section covers steel tubing and all the variations of butting
and tapers.
There are 101 Figures, including photos and drawings, that reflect the
attention to details in this Chapter.
4. THE GENERAL PREPARATION [Sample Page]
Here Tim moves from the unglamorous, but essential, cleaning of the
tubing on to how to miter tubes and file lugs either by machine or with
a minimum of equipment and minimum scraped knuckles. This Chapter serves
as a checklist of all the detail steps you don't want to forget in
putting together a frame. 57 Figures pretty much cover it all.
5. BUILDING THE SUBASSEMBLIES [Sample Page]
Tim's method of building involves making one joint at a time. He begins
with these subassemblies: seat tube/bottom bracket shell; down tube/head
tube; steerer/crown; fork blade/dropout; chainstay/dropout.
This Chapter takes you through these subassemblies in detail. Tim
separates out the different requirements throughout this chapter between
lugged and lugless construction.
If you prefer to use a different approach to frame construction, you can
use Chapters 5 through 8 as a general guide to make sure you don't miss
any important details.
48 Figures in this Chapter.
6. THE FRONT TRIANGLE [Sample Page]
Now Tim shows you how to join the Front Triangle subassemblies. And
shows how to miter and fit the top tube to complete the main triangle,
lugged or lugless. And he does it all in 64 Figures.
7. THE FORK [Sample Page]
Here you complete the fork, either with fork crown or Unicrown
construction. Lots of important details require 65 Figures.
8. THE REAR TRIANGLE [Sample Page]
The seat stays are now fitted, with the options of fastback or side tack
construction covered in detail. 46 Figures show the completion and
installation of the rear triangle.
9. BRIDGES, BRAZE-ONS, AND FINAL TOUCHES [Sample Page]
How to install bridges using both silver and brass options are
discussed. All braze-ons are covered in detail.
The "Final Touches" section of the Chapter includes checking and aligning
the dropouts.
With a professional framebuilder's attention to detail, Tim needed 78
Figures to do the job right.
10. PAINTING [Sample Page]
The painting Chapter is the least changed from the previous edition. It
goes into a lot of detail about required equipment and safety
precautions. Only 37 Figures in this Chapter.
11. BUILDING CUSTOM STEMS [Sample Page]
The information in this Chapter is new to the Paterek Manual. Tim shows
how to make traditional road stems, Aheadset compatible stems, stoker
stems for tandems, and even makes suggestions about adjustable stems with
the help of 29 Figures.
12. BUILDING CUSTOM RACKS [Sample Page]
Another totally new Chapter. Obviously, it is aimed at the builder who
wants to make custom front and rear racks. Tim covers steel tubing
selection, bending equipment and techniques. 29 Figures show you how.
13. TANDEMS [Sample Page]
This new Chapter discusses the tandem frame design. The 57 figures show
all the common and exotic tandem frame tube arrangements, and a lot of
design details.
14. FRAME REPAIR [Sample Page]
Tim divided repairs into two categories: Hot and Cold. "Hot" involves
using your torch to remove and reattach the repaired areas. "Cold"
repairs involve realigning, cold setting, refacing and tapping. Most of
the Chapter is devoted to "Hot" repairs like tube replacements. Sorry,
no Figures in this Chapter. Tim does a good job of talking you through
the repairs.
GLOSSARY
128 entries cover the framebuilder's world.
INDEX
Tim has created a complete index of 69 subject areas with about 500 entries.
APPENDICES:
APPENDIX A - GETTING STARTED
Here Tim has information about Schools and Training, how to promote your
business on the Internet, resources, and financing. Plus a list of 9 things
to do and not do in your business.
Tim's "FRAMEBUILDER'S LABOR AND PRICE SCHEDULE" is worth the price of
the book. He describes every service a framebuilder is likely to offer,
and lists suggested times for each job. You just multiply the time by
your hourly shop rate.
APPENDIX B - RECOMMENDED REFERENCES
A listing of 18 references and books (Out of Print ones are identified,
so you can begin your search for them.)
APPENDIX C - PATEREK SOFTWARE AND VIDEOS
Tim provides links to his site.
APPENDIX D - PLANS FOR FIXTURES [Sample Page]
These are 56 engineering drawings of Tim's frame and fork fixtures.
APPENDIX E - RESOURCE LIST
This is a list of over 60 Vendors, Manufacturers, and Distributors of
interest to bicycle framebuilders.
APPENDIX F - FIXTURING HINTS FROM HENRY JAMES
