Two of the most important qualities of a bicycle frame are the following:
  • The fit is the best possible for the rider
  • The design is the best possible for its use.
Each Chris Kvale frame is custom made with emphasis on both qualities.

The fitting procedure in the shop takes about three hours and includes a thorough discussion of the design concepts and dimensions of the frame. In addition to the customer's body measurements for the new frame, the fitting includes an analysis of the existing frame and a ride together to understand the dynamic relationship of the rider and the bicycle.

All frames are designed for stability and comfort; the type and weight of tubing are chosen to match the customer's use, weight, and riding style. They are built in a traditional style with standard dimension tubing, curved fork blades, all standard braze-ons, two styles of seatstays, and a stainless steel tunnel through the top tube for the rear brake casing. Materials include Columbus™ and Reynolds™ tubing, investment cast fork crowns engraved CKC, Henry James™ investment cast lugs and bottom brackets, and forged dropouts. The frame is silver brazed throughout, except for the dropouts, which are brass brazed. Each frame is made individually; the lugs are finely filed, thinned, and finished to an elegant simplicity, expressing a high level of craftsmanship.

Painting, decaling, and clearcoating are all done by Chris. A wide choice of DuPont Imron™ paint , either solid or metallic, is available. Each paint job is custom; one color with a contrasting seat tube panel is the most popular scheme. Multiple coats of clear are applied over the decals to achieve a smooth, level finish.

Chris Kvale's thirty-five years on the bike includes twenty years of competition, a transcontinental record, long-distance touring, and commuting. This broad experience reflects a passion for cycling which brings a unique depth of understanding to his twenty-five years of frame building and to his customers.

Classic sport and recreational road frames are the speciality of Chris Kvale Cycles. Touring, commuting, and racing (road and track) frames are also designed and produced.

HANK'S COMMENTS: I have visited Chris at his shop, and found both the shop and his frames to be very clean and well-organized. Chris is another builder who practices what he preaches.
